Manga left unfinished in English

20 manga whose English edition stopped at least three years ago, with more volumes out in Japan, as of November 3, 2026.

Between them, 300 Japanese volumes have never come out in English. The typical series here is missing 11 volumes; Gintama is missing the most, stopping at Vol. 23 in English while Japan has 77. By the year the last English volume came out: 2000s: 5, 2010s: 15. The publishers with the most stopped series here are Viz Media (5), Tokyopop (3), Kodansha USA (1).

If you start one of these, you can read in English up to the volume shown, then the story continues only in Japanese (or in other translations). We'll add the date here if any of them gets a new English volume.

Questions

Which manga has the most volumes never released in English?

Gintama: the English edition from Viz Media stopped at Vol. 23 in 2011, and Japan has 77 volumes, so 54 volumes have not come out in English.

Why do English manga releases stop?

Usually because sales didn't justify more volumes, the license expired, or the publisher closed its manga line. Many English editions from the 2000s stopped when Tokyopop shut down its US publishing in 2011 (3 of the series here were from Tokyopop). A stopped series can still be picked up again, sometimes by a different publisher.

How do you decide a series is unfinished in English?

No new English volume has come out or been announced for at least three years, and Japan has more volumes than the English edition. Series that are simply slow, or that only lack an announcement for the next volume, are not on this list.
